In my past life as a retail dietitian, one of the {many} highlights of my job was providing nutrition education in the form of grocery store tours. Customers would come to me for help with a variety of nutrition concerns like managing their diabetes or advice on how to meal plan with specific food allergies. I would guide customers around the store stopping at various points to read labels and offer suggestions for items that would fit their specific diet. Regardless of the initial reason for the tour, eventually we would stop to talk snacks. Let’s be honest, everyone loves a good snack but we don’t always make the best choices when it comes to making healthy snacking decisions.
When it comes to snacking I usually offer a few basic suggestions. First, I always stress the importance of planning ahead. Most of us are not going to go out of our way to wash and chop veggies at that moment hunger hits. We are much more likely to grab for healthy foods when they are prepped and ready to eat. Secondly, I recommend aiming for either high protein OR a veggie-packed snack. So set yourself up for success by prepping vegetables ahead of time to pair with good sources of protein like string cheese, nuts, or hummus.
In my opinion, hummus is synonymous with snacking. During nearly every single grocery store tour I would stop in the deli department in front of the hummus display to talk snack ideas, it was like clockwork. Beyond being a great source of plant-based protein, hummus is low in fat compared to other dips which makes it the PERFECT pairing for fresh veggies and thus, the perfect snack.
Alright, let’s talk about these hummus balls. Hummus, in ball form! How great is that?! Hummus is already the perfect snack so I thought, how can the perfect snack be any more perfect-er? Bite-sized balls, that’s how! These little cuties were a breeze to toss together with just 3 ingredients. Sabra hummus, feta cheese, and sesame seeds. That’s it! For an easy appetizer serve with cucumbers and tomatoes or top off your favorite salad with a few of these creamy, protein-packed bites!

- In a food processor or magic bullet, quickly puree the feta cheese for 1 to 2 seconds. In a small bowl, mix hummus with the feta cheese until well combined. Place the hummus mixture in the freezer for 5-10 minutes or until slightly firm to allow for easier rolling.
- Prepare the cucumber by slicing into 1/4 inch rounds then slice each round into thirds. Placed sliced cucumbers and cherry tomatoes into a small bowl with olive oil, fresh dill, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine and set aside.
- To make the hummus balls, measure out about 1 tsp of hummus mixture and roll into a ball between your hands. Place the hummus balls onto a non-stick baking pan and repeat until all of the hummus mixture is gone. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 10 minutes.
- In a small bowl place 1 tsp of sesame seeds. Roll each ball in sesame seeds until completely covered, adding 1 tsp of seeds to the bowl as needed. Skewer one slice of cucumber, a tomato, and a hummus ball on a toothpick. Store in an airtight container until ready to serve.
